Golden Eagles record first BIG EAST win of the season
MILWAUKEE – Mads Konrad Horgoien scored twice and assisted on another goal as Marquette scored four times and posted its fourth shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over Butler on Saturday evening at Valley Fields. The Golden Eagles improved to 8-4-1 overall and 1-3-0 in BIG EAST play.
Marquette controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting Butler 18-3 and holding the Bulldogs to just one shot on goal all night.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Mads Konrad Horgoien converted a penalty kick. Mateo Stoka earned the foul just inside the 18-yard box. The goal gave the Konrad Horgoien his fifth score of the season and sent Marquette into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Despite generating 10 first-half shots, Marquette was unable to add to its advantage until the final 15 minutes of regulation.
The breakthrough came in the 76th minute when Joey Buchanan found the back of the net, doubling the lead to 2-0. Persistent, the sophomore weaved his way through a pack of defenders on the edge of the box and ripped a shot across the face of the goal, low inside the right post. The goal was Buchanan's sixth of the season.
Just over three minutes later, Konrad Horgoien set up Tomiwa Adewumi in the 79th minute to push the margin to 3-0, sliding a pass through the six-yard box to the freshman for a tap-in. The goal was Adewumi's ninth of the season.
Konrad Horgoien put the exclamation point on his night 63 seconds later, roofing a shot past the Butler keeper.
In goal, Cameron Simpson needed to make just one save to record the clean sheet as the Marquette's back line limited Butler to only three total shots.
