Track and Field Set to Open Season at Notre Dame

The Blue & Gold Invitational begins with the long jump at 3 p.m. CT
MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University men's and women's track and field programs kick off the 2019-20 season at the Notre Dame Blue & Gold Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. on Friday, Dec. 6.

After starting the indoor season at Parkside last year, Marquette is back to Notre Dame to start the year, the same place they have started the season for 10 of the last 11 years. The meet begins at 3 p.m. CT with the men's long jump. Other field events begin at 4 p.m. followed by running events at 5 p.m. The final events of the night begin at 8 p.m.

MU returns three BIG EAST indoor champions in 2019-20 and 22 all-conference honorees from last season. The meet will take place at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center.

Senior Daniel Armstrong: "It's definitely going to be an exciting season. We lost a bunch of seniors this past year, but the coaching staff also brought in a great group of freshmen. Everyone's been putting in the work this fall and we just want to start the season off in a great way."

Both the men's and women's teams are looking to bring the BIG EAST indoor title back to Milwaukee, following a sweep by Villanova last year on both sides.

The MU men took runner-up honors at the BIG EAST indoor championships last year with 169.5 points. The Golden Eagle men's team has taken second place in five consecutive years at conference indoor events.

Coach Rogers and the women's squad placed third last year at the BIG EAST indoor championships with 113 points. Since conference realignment (2014), MU has placed second twice (2015 and 2018) and took home titles twice (2016 and 2017).

NOTABLES:
- Daniel Armstrong (high jump), Cameron Jemison (pole vault) and Samuel Johnson (long jump) all return in 2019-20 after winning conference titles at their respective events during the 2018-19 indoor season.
- ArmstrongΒ earned NCAA Second Team All-America honors in the men's high jump for a second year in a row with a 14th-place finish (2.15 m/7-2 ft) at the 2019 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
- Keely Knobbe (weight throw) was the only MU woman to win an indoor conference title last season, but her eligibility expired last spring.
- 18 Marquette University track and field student-athletes, including six women and 12 men, earned 22 All-BIG EAST honors at the 2019 indoor championships.
- Emma Moravec set the indoor school record last year in the 800m with a time of 2:09.60 at the BIG EAST Championships.
- Bre Marchan (long jump, 55m) and Madison Marko (pentathlon) each sit in the top-five all-time in school history in their respective events.
- Daniel Armstrong (high jump) holds the No. 2 all-time mark in program history (2.21m/7-3 ft)
- Samuel Johnson is in the top-five all-time in both the indoor long jump and triple jump.
- Joe Keys is the school-record holder in the indoor heptathlon (5,338 points).
