Series With DePaul Dates Back To 1917-18
Â
Marquette's all-time series with DePaul dates back to the 1917-18 season (second year of MU's varsity competition) and includes 124 previous meetings.
Â
The Golden Eagles own a 77-47 advantage in the series and have claimed 13 of the last 16 matchups overall. The extensive series history has been aided by the fact the two programs have been in the same league dating back to the 1991-92 campaign. Since that season, the teams have shared affiliation in the Great Midwest Conference, Conference USA and BIG EAST Conference.
Â
The Golden Eagles posted a 79-69 win at Fiserv Forum in the first meeting this season on Jan. 23. Guard Markus Howard led four scorers in double figures with 23 points and MU's defense allowed DePaul to shoot just 38.1 percent from the floor.
Â
In program history, Marquette has faced only rival Wisconsin (125) on more occasions.
Â
Marquette Reaches 20-Win Mark
Â
Saturday's win over Villanova was the team's 20th of the season, marking the third time in five seasons under Steve Wojciechowski the Golden Eagles have reached that mark.
Â
In the program's tradition-filled 102 years, Marquette has claimed 29-or-more wins on 38 occasions. The season's edition of the squad is the fastest to reach 20 wins since 2008-09, when MU started 20-2.
Â
Anim Steps Up At Both Ends In Villanova Win   Â
Â
Redshirt junior forward Sacar Anim, the team's top perimeter defender, was charged with keeping Villanova's guard corps in check at the defensive end Saturday afternoon.
Â
Not only did Anim provide a solid effort at that end, he also contributed offensively in the one-point victory. The Minneapolis, Minnesota native finished with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor and also chipped in a pair of rebounds in 36 minutes of action. He scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half and knocked down a pair of treys, matching his career high.
Â
Anim is averaging 10.2 points per game in league play while shooting 47.9 percent from the floor overall and 44.0 percent from behind the 3-point line, well above his season-long statistics.
Â
Howard Shoots Up All-Time Scoring List
Â
Junior guard Markus Howard scored 38 points in the win over Villanova, in the process jumping from 11th to sixth on the school's all-time scoring list in the process.
             Â
Howard moved past Wesley Matthews, Tony Smith, Brian Wardle and Travis Diener and is now 27 points behind 1978 Naismith Award winner Butch Lee. Jerel McNeal (2005-09) is the all-time leading scorer at 1,985 points.
