RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- Oliver Farrell's final round 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday closed his tournament with a 2-under-par T-15 finish, while Marquette finished eighth at the 27th annual Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue at Rio Mar C.C.
Marquette posted a 54-hole 874 (294-285-295) in the three-day PRC, an event which featured eight Golfstat top-50 programs (MU - No. 31) and 20 top-100 players (Hunter Eichhorn - No. 59; Oliver Farrell - No. 90) in the 75-man field.
Peach State rivals No. 5 Georgia Tech (Bushnell/GCAA Poll) and No. 18 Georgia shared the victory with a 16-under-par (848) performance. Three players shared medalist honors at 6-under-par in a crowded field - Farrell's 2-under-par score was just four strokes off the lead pace, as 22 players finished under par.
Hunter Eichhorn also turned in a sub-par card, finishing tied for 21st at 1-under-par (72-70-73—215). Â
Farrell (75-69-70–214) started his final round with a bogey on the Par 4 9th, where he teed off in the shotgun start format. But the senior rallied to go 3-under-par with no bogeys over his next 13 holes, while posting four final round birdies. Farrell finished with a 54-hole sub-par score for the fourth straight tournament and fifth time in six starts.
Eichhorn found a similar fate as Farrell with his start, making a double bogey on the Par 5 8th and a bogey on the 9th to begin his round, before going 2-under-par to close out a final round 73. The PRC marked Eichhorn's fourth sub-par tournament in six starts this season.
The Golden Eagles collected 49 birdies, sixth in the 15-team field and led by Eichhorn's field-best 16 birdie makes. The average individual score was 73.47, with a final round low of 72.73.
Marquette continues its spring schedule at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan, March 9-10 in Scottsdale, Arizona. That event begins a 10-day spring play and practice trip for the Golden Eagles in Arizona, coinciding with the university's Spring Break.
