Three second-half goals not enough for MU
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team fell to Notre Dame, 19-4, in its home opener at Valley Fields on Friday afternoon.
Â
Marquette (0-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) was led by graduate student Charlotte McGuire with two goals on four shots, while junior Megan Menzuber and freshman Shea Garcia added in a goal apiece. Senior Grace Gabriel nabbed a team-high three draw controls.
Â
Junior Jules Horning made eight saves in her 33 minutes of action while sophomore Sophia Leva added in four in 26 minutes.
Â
Notre Dame (1-0, 0-0 ACC) rattled off a trio of goals in the first 10 minutes of action to help build an 8-0 run. The Fighting Irish finished out the first half with a 9-1 lead as Menzuber tallied Marquette's first goal of the season on a free-position shot with 5:44 to go in the opening frame.
Â
The Golden Eagles saw a spark from McGuire when the Northfield, Illinois native fired off a goal just over 5 minutes into the second half. Freshman Shea Garcia, who also got the start in her first collegiate game, was able to put one in the net after curling around the crease.Â
Â
McGuire recorded yet another tally, but the three goals in a seven-minute span were not enough for the Golden Eagles to overcome a double-digit deficit.
Â
Notre Dame was paced by five players with three-or-more goals and led by Samantha Lynch with six of her own.
Â
Marquette finishes out its two-game home stand on Sunday against another ACC opponent in Louisville. First draw is set for Noon CT.
