
Gabriel scores five as MU tops Louisville, 15-12

The Golden Eagles picked up their first win of the season on Sunday at Valley Fields
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season against the Louisville Cardinals, 15-12, on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Grace Gabriel scored five goal to lead the Golden Eagles (1-1), while Lindsey Willcocks and Madison Kane each recorded a hat trick.
The Golden Eagles scored six of the first seven goals, with the first MU tally coming off Gabriel's stick at the 27:50 mark of the opening half. Louisville would fight back to tie the game at 7-7 with 2:28 left in the half.
Gabriel closed out the opening half by completing a hat trick with two free-position scores to give Marquette a 9-7 lead at the half.
Louisville opened the second half with a score to narrow the MU lead to one before the Cards and MU exchanged three-goal runs.
Marquette would hold on in the end, extending the lead to two, with a Gabriel score seven minutes away from the final horn. The Golden Eagles would extend it to three with only five seconds remaining with a final score from Willcocks.
Jules Horning made nine saves in net for the Golden Eagles, while each side fired 30 shots on the afternoon.
The women head to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on the Bearcats this Friday, Feb. 15. Opening draw is slated for 11 a.m. CT.
