Verdu earns win over 53-ranked player
The Marquette University men's tennis team (3-3) dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 25 Minnesota Saturday night in non-conference action at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The Golden Eagles, who are in the midst of a four-match road swing, return to action Feb. 14 at Wisconsin. Each of the team's three losses this year has come against Big Ten opponents.
The Golden Gophers opened the match by claiming the doubles point and earned a trio of singles wins to secure the team victory. MU was able to pick up two points, courtesy of senior Alvaro Verdu's most impressive win of the campaign. He downed No. 53 Josip Krstanovic 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 1 position. Â
Junior Luke Smrek was also victorious, earning a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 win at No. 3.
