The No. 23/22 Marquette University men's basketball team (23-8, 12-6 BIG EAST) has earned the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep and will face the winner of St. John's/DePaul at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, March 14 in Madison Square Garden. FS1 will feature the television coverage, with Gus Johnson (play-by-play), Bill Raftery (analyst) and Lisa Byington (reporter) calling the action. The winner of Thursday night's game advances to the tournament semifinals on Friday, March 15 at 8 p.m. CT.
Mixed Results For MU In League Tourney
Marquette has advanced to at least the league tourney quarterfinals every season since joining the BIG EAST in 2005-06, the longest current run by any program in the conference.
The Golden Eagles are 11-13 all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament and 23-28 in postseason events since joining a league for the first time in 1989-90. MU hasn't advanced to the semifinals since 2010 when it was defeated by Georgetown 80-57 and owns just one other Friday-night appearance, falling to Pittsburgh 68-61 in 2008.
Marquette's No. 2 seed (2012) matches its highest since joining the BIG EAST and the program's lone league tournament title came in 1997 as a member of Conference USA.
Bailey, Morrow Providing Bench Production
While a majority of Marquette's production at both ends of the court has come from its starting five this year (same combination since late November), reserves Brendan Bailey and Ed Morrow have made important contributions in recent outings.
Bailey netted a career-best 11 points in the regular-season finale against Georgetown, courtesy of a personal-high trio of treys. The freshman forward is averaging 9.0 points per game in the team's last two outings.
Morrow grabbed a Marquette-high 11 rebounds (career high is 18 boards against Gardner Webb in 2016-17 while at Nebraska) versus the Hoyas and contributed seven points in 17 minutes at Seton Hall.
Turnovers, Free Throw Line Factors Recent Outings
One of the last teams in the country to drop back-to-back games this season, the Golden Eagles have lost four-consecutive contests as play in the BIG EAST Tournament begins.
MU has held second-half leads in each of the last four outings, with turnovers and a disparity at the free throw line factoring in as two of the biggest reasons for the streak. The Golden Eagles are averaging 15.8 turnovers per contest since the loss at Villanova and have been outscored 82-49 at the free throw line. The BIG EAST's top free throw shooting team is 49-of-68 (72.1 percent) from the charity stripe since Feb. 27, but MU's opponents have combined to shoot 82-of-114 (71.9 percent).
