ORLANDO – A contingent of Marquette University jumpers and throwers began the 2019 outdoor season on Friday afternoon at the Black & Gold Challenge, hosted by the University of Central Florida at the UCF Track & Soccer Stadium.
Senior Brendan McKinney picked up where he left off during the indoor season while transitioning from the weight to hammer throw with an event victory at a distance of 52.98 meters (173 feet, 10 inches). McKinney won the weight throw at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in February and sits fourth all-time in Marquette history in the hammer throw.
Fellow men's thrower Eric Fellin finished as the top affiliated collegian in the javelin with a toss of 58.10 meters (190 feet, 7 inches) to place second overall.
Meanwhile in the men's pole vault, BIG EAST indoor champion Cameron Jemison placed second at a height of 4.55 meters (14 feet, 11 inches) and was tied by William Eggers who also cleared the height, but in one more attempt. Those marks are both No. 10 in MU history.
On the women's side, Rachel Seraphine placed second in the pole vault at 3.70 meters (12 feet, 1.5 inches) and senior Keely Knobbe pushed herself up to No. 8 all-time at MU in the hammer throw at a mark of 53.73 meters (176 feet, 3 inches).
The Golden Eagles resume action at the Black & Gold Challenge at 9 a.m. Central time on Saturday with Lizzy Cagle, Allie Flando and Knobbe in the women's discus. Events are scheduled to conclude following the men's 1,600-meter relay at 3 p.m. Central time.
