Golden Eagles conclude spring break trip
SAN JOSE, Calif.-- In the final match of a three-match spring break trip out west, the Marquette women's tennis team played to the final point, dropping a heartbreaking 4-3 decision to San Jose State on Saturday.
Marquette (8-7) got on board first claiming the doubles point as Lesley Foe and Milica Novakovic scored first with a swift 6-1 win as Fleur Eggink and Natalija Popovic clinched the point winning 6-4 at the top position.
In singles play San Jose tied the match at 1-1 with a singles victory, but Novakovic won her No. 3 match, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, to put the Golden Eagles back in front. Eggink broke another tie and put Marquette in front 3-2 after winning at No. 1, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, but in narrow margins, San Jose State took control to win the match, 4-3. It was an extremely close match as five of the six singles courts went into third sets.
Marquette will head back to competition against BIG EAST foes and travel to Xavier on Saturday March 23. First serve is slated for 2 or 4 p.m. CT depending on whether the squads play indoors or outdoors.
