No. 3 MU will face No. 6 Villanova
MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University women's tennis team has claimed the No. 3 seed in the 2019 BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship presented by Jeep and will open play in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 19 at 3 p.m. CT, the league office announced on Monday.
The tournament will be held at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C. for the third second straight season.
The Golden Eagles will open against No. 6 Villanova, a BIG EAST squad that they did not play during the regular season. Marquette finished dual action with an 12-9 record.
Junior Fleur Eggnik had a successful season for the Golden Eagles, compiling a 13-6 singles record, playing primarily in the No. 1 position, while teammate Milica Novakovic also had a strong junior campaign with a 11-8 singles record.
Eggnik has teamed with sophomore Natalija Popovic for a 9-6 record in doubles action, primarily in the No. 1 slot, while Novakovic has had success playing alongside junior Isabelle Franks in the No. 3 spot.
Following the quarterfinals round, Marquette would face the winner of No. 2 DePaul vs. either Creighton or Providence on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. CT.
Seeds are determined by the conference's tennis championship and coaches' seeding advisory committees that review each team's regular-season schedule, ITA rankings, results against BIG EAST and common non-conference opponents and wins/losses against ranked foes.
