Anderson, Verdu to be honored Sunday
The Marquette University men's tennis team (11-6) will be battling at home this weekend as it hopes to continue its four-match winning streak.
The Golden Eagles have claimed 18-straight home matches dating back to the start of the 201-18 campaign and are 7-0 at Helfaer this season.
"We have done a good job of protecting our home courts for the last few seasons and that has continued this year," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Our guys enjoy playing here and we always have great fan support.
Wright State University (7-14) will be in town on Friday, April 5 to compete against the Golden Eagles at Helfaer Tennis & Recreation Center while the St. John's Red Storm (10-5) will take the courts Sunday, April 7. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
Marquette men's tennis is 4-0 against BIG EAST teams this season and will try to remain perfect as it competes with St. John's on Sunday. The final home match of the season will be Senior Day for Greg Anderson and Alvaro Verdu.
A three-time all-BIG EAST honoree, Verdu was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year as a junior in 2017-18. The Elda, Spain native has been the squad's No. 1 player since his sophomore campaign and he owns over 50 career singles victories and 100 total wins during his career.
Anderson has been a valuable member of the lineup since transferring from TCU in the Winter of 2016. He was named the program's most improved player in 2016-17 and has posted winning singles records in each of his seasons with the Golden Eagles. A two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection, the Tucson, Arizona is currently second on the team in singles wins with 21.
"Greg and Al have played a key role in our success, basically since they both arrived on campus," Rodecap said. "Al has been at the top of our lineup for three years and Greg has been one of the most consistent performers we have had in dual play. It's a bittersweet day for our program, but we know they will both be successful professionally as they move on from Marquette."
After Sunday's matchup the team will prepare for a road trip to finish off BIG EAST regular season play with a match against Butler on Saturday, April 13, followed by Xavier on Sunday, April 14.
