MU was making fifth-straight appearance
The Marquette University men's tennis team (15-9) dropped a tough 4-3 decision to St. John's (19-5) Monday morning in the title match of the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament Presented by Jeep in Cayce, S.C.
Marquette opened the match by claiming the doubles point in dramatic fashion. Senior Alvaro Verdu and Brett Meyers trailed 2-0 at No. 1, but were able to chip away and eventually able to claim a 7-5 win. Junior Luke Smrek and freshman Fran San Andreas were in control 5-2 at No. 3, but the deciding matchup was extended to the tiebreaker. MU moved ahead 6-2 in the breaker, but wasn't able to secure the valuable doubles point until San Andres ended a long volley to wrap it up at 8-6.
The Golden Eagles continued the momentum into singles play and straight-set wins by Greg Anderson (No. 5) and Brandon Shanklin (No. 6) gave the team a 3-0 advantage. However, the Red Storm did the same at a trio of spots and suddenly the match was tied at 3-3.
The championship came down to the No. 4 spot and Brett Meyers rallied for a 7-5 win the first set, only to see STJ's Dusan Vukicevic do the same in the second for a 6-4 victory. Vukicevic took control with eight-straight wins and Meyers was unable to dig out of a 4-0 hole in the third set.
The Golden Eagles were making their fifth-straight title appearance, claiming the championship in 2018.
