The Golden Eagles will visit Italy, France and Spain in June
MILWAUKEE--The Marquette women's volleyball team is excited to announce a foreign tour from June 2-14 this summer with stops in Italy, France and Spain.
The Golden Eagles depart Chicago on June 2 and will arrive in Milan in the morning of June 3 where they will hit the ground running with a practice at the Italian Olympic Training Center. Marquette will have overnight stops at Acqui Terme, Italy and in Montpellier and Toulouse, France before concluding the tour in Barcelona, Spain. While overseas the squad will also visit various cities with day stops during travel, including Lake Como, Italy, the Italian Riviera and Nice and Aix-en-Provence, France.
Marquette will play four matches while on tour but have training with the French Development Team on multiple days facing quality volleyball opponents.
European volleyball teams play the game under different rules, so Marquette will have to adjust its mindset. This will create an opportunity for the Golden Eagles to expand their understanding of the game globally. Any ball that touches the ceiling is automatically out of play and match warmups are all shared time, while the most notable rule change is that all matches are considered friendly. This means most matches will use one official and no line judges. The universal part of the game is the ball, the net, and the love of the game by players from different parts of the world.
From May 19 – May 31 the Golden Eagles will conduct 10-days of practice, as allowed by the NCAA for teams heading on foreign tours, with time off for Memorial Day in between. Due to NCAA rule changes, incoming freshmen and transfers are now allowed to take part in foreign trips without having to first complete summer courses. These changes now make it much easier to allow newcomers Gwyn Jones, Kaitlyn Lines, Claire Nuessmeier and Hannah Vanden Berg to participate on the tour. The NCAA allows each sport take a Foreign Tour no more frequently than once every four years and despite taking a foreign tour just three years ago, Marquette Volleyball was granted a waiver by the NCAA to go this year so that seniors Allie Barber, Madeline Mosher and Lauren Speckman, who were affected by the previous summer enrollment rules, would have the student-athlete experience of participating on a foreign tour during their time here at Marquette.
