MADISON, Wis. – Paced by eight new top-10 marks in program history, the Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams concluded action prior to outdoor championship season at the Wisconsin Alumni Classic in Madison at the McClimon Track Complex.
"We had eight new top-10 marks but one of the bigger highlights of the meet for us was in the women's high jump where Lindsey Mirkes and Marin McClowry each jumped personal lifetime bests," MU head coach Bert Rogers said following the meet. "Lindsey won and is 22nd in the West Region, which should put her into the preliminary rounds. Keely (Knobbe) had a big PR in the hammer, and Terrance (Howard) a PR in the shot put. Rachel (Seraphine) also continues to improve with another PR in the pole vault, upping her freshman record and remaining at No. 4 all-time."
Mirkes height of 1.76 meters (5 feet, 9.25 inches) ties her with Chris Spindler for second in program history but is still an inch and a half behind MU record holder Erynn James. The De Pere, Wisconsin native cleared the bar on her third attempt at the height, while McClowry, who placed second in the event, faulted on all three attempts at the mark. McClowry's leap of 1.73 meters (5-8) is sixth all-time at MU and moves her into the top 50 of the NCAA West Region.
In the pole vault, Seraphine continued her stellar rookie campaign with a third-place finish by reaching a height of 3.83 meters (12-6.75), while sophomore Brielle Buechler was fifth at 3.68 meters (12-0.75).
In the early throwing events, Knobbe recorded her top hammer throw on her second toss of the afternoon, a distance of 56.07 meters (183-11) that ranks fifth in Marquette history. She also competed in the discus, where she was the top MU finisher, and the shot put.
Howard moved into the MU top-10 in the men's shot put with a heave of 16.08 (52-9.25) on his fifth and penultimate throw.
On the track, Brad Eagan moved close to a West Preliminary Round mark in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:50.82 to finish fifth, while Emma Moravec was third in the women's 800 in 2:09.02. Moravec's time is third all-time at Marquette and Eagan's is seventh in the men's top 10.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, May 10 in the BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, presented by Jeep, at Icahn Stadium in New York City.
