
No. 16 MU Sweeps Utah Valley in Season Opener

Allie Barber led all hitters with 14 kills
PROVO, Utah—No. 16 Marquette University volleyball opened the 2019 campaign on Friday morning with a swift 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-22) over Utah Valley University in the opening match of the BYU Nike Invitational.
Marquette (1-0) wins its sixth straight season opener as BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year senior Allie Barber led all hitters with 14 kills and just two errors to hit at a .444 clip. As a squad the Golden Eagles hit .379 with juniors Kaitlyn Lines (.500), Hope Werch (.438) and Elizabeth Orf (.417) all hitting over the .400 mark.
Senior setter Lauren Speckman and junior Sarah Rose teamed up to share setting duties once again, handing out 24 and 11 assists, respectively. Junior libero Martha Konovodoff collected nine digs in the match.
The Golden Eagles opened the match with a 25-14 victory in set one as the squad combined to hit .423, while Barber and Werch connected on five and four kills, respectively. Barber matched in set two with five kills, three consecutively to close out the second frame helping MU to a 25-18 win. The Wolverines (0-1) gave Marquette some trouble in the third set as the Golden Eagles trailed for the first time in the match, but a stretch of back-to-back kills from Lines helped MU close out the match in a 25-22 win.
Kazna Tarawhiti tallied 13 kills and 10 digs for Utah Valley, while the team hit at just a .165 mark.
MU is back in action later Friday and will face Boise State at 6:30 p.m. CT in Provo.
