MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the University of Milwaukee at Engelmann Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Â
Josh Coan scored the lone goal for the Golden Eagles, who led 1-0 until the 50th minute, when Milwaukee headed in a corner kick to tie the game. The Panthers second goal in the 76th minute came off a header that redirected into the net off a free kick.
Â
"I'm disappointed that we gave goals away off set pieces," Marquette head coach Louis Bennett said. "Any time we come here we have to avoid those errors if we want to win the game."
Â
Coan, a senior forward from Indianapolis, Indiana, netted his third goal of the season (all in the past two games) in the 25th minute to break the scoreless tie. He gathered the ball just inside the box, created space to his right and laced a shot from 20 yards out that landed perfectly in the top left corner of the net.
Â
"It was a good ball by Leo [Villa] and I had a lot more time than I initially thought," Coan said. "I was able to create some space, get a shot off and luckily find the back of the net."
Â
His goal helped his team go into halftime with a 1-0 lead despite trailing in the shots column, seven to four.
Â
Milwaukee came out of the halftime break strong and scored the equalizer just five minutes in. Jake Kelderman headed in a corner kick from the far post, with the assist going to Josh Kidder.
Â
The Panthers scored their second and final goal off the game when Vuk Latinovich got his head on a free kick and placed it perfectly in the lower right corner of the net.
Â
MU had a couple last-minute attempts to tie up the match but couldn't break through.
"We have good players and there were times when we played well enough to win," Bennett said. "We had a chance to go up 2-0 in the first half off a set piece, and that would have been huge to get that one right before the half. The second goal in a 1-0 game is always crucial."
Â
With the loss, the Golden Eagles drop to 2-2-1 on the season while the Panthers improve to 4-2.

The Golden Eagles are back home to kick off BIG EAST play on Friday, Sept. 20 against Creighton. The match will begin at 7:35 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the MU women's team.
