The Golden Eagles return to the court Saturday night against Northern Iowa
MILWAUKEE—The eighth-ranked Marquette Volleyball team completed a second consecutive sweep, topping Saint Louis, 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-19) on Saturday morning opening the second day of the Hyatt Regency Marquette Invitational.
Marquette (9-2) was led by senior Allie Barber with a match-high 17 kills, hitting at a .464 clip, while junior Kaitlyn Lines added nine kills with three blocks. Earning her first career start, junior Sandy Mohr added six blocks, helping the Golden Eagles to a season-best 10 team blocks. Barber and classmate Gwyn Jones each contributed four blocks.
Sophomore Claire Mosher led the squad with 18 assists, while senior Lauren Speckman dished out 12 assists. Junior libero Martha Konovodoff collected 15 digs.
After taking the first set in a swift, 25-13 win, the Golden Eagles fell behind early in set two, but used an 8-2 run to take a 17-14 lead in the second set. Saint Louis continued to pressure MU scoring three unanswered points near the end of the set before a service error gave Marquette the 25-23 win. The final set was also tightly contested with the score tied six times and the lead changing twice, but the Golden Eagles held off the Billikens.
SLU (6-6) was led by Margaret Mahlke and Sien Gallop, each with seven kills, while Sara Daniels totaled six blocks.
Marquette will have short rest and be back on the floor tonight at 7 p.m. CT hosting Northern Iowa to conclude the weekend tournament.
