Barber was named MU Invitational MVP; Konovodoff and Speckman earn all-tournament honors
MILWAUKEE— The No. 8 Marquette volleyball team is off to its best start since the 1997 season after a 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 28-26, 25-6) comeback victory over Northern Iowa on Saturday evening, to conclude the Hyatt Regency Marquette Invitational as champions.
The Golden Eagles (10-2) close out non-conference season on a high note winning their fourth-straight match and will continue a six-match homestand with three BIG EAST matches at the Al McGuire Center.
Senior Allie Barber was named MVP of the tournament, averaging 5.00 kills per set over the weekend, including 17 in the victory over the Panthers. Classmate Lauren Speckman and junior Martha Konovodoff earned all-tournament honors.
Junior Kaitlyn Lines recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs, while hitting .308 against UNI, while Sarah Rose also notched a double-double, her first of the season, dishing out 21 assists with 10 digs. Speckman handed out 26 assists and Konovodoff added 28 digs.
After dropping the first set, MU regained footing in the second and held off a late charge from the Panthers. In the third set, the Golden Eagles staved off three set point attempts from UNI and came back winning 28-26 in extra points, before taking a commanding 9-0 lead in the fourth frame, never looking back.
The Panthers (6-8) had three players record double-digit kills, while Abbi Staack collected a match-high 34 digs.
Marquette opens BIG EAST play on Wednesday, Sept. 25 hosting Butler for an 11:30 a.m. matinee for kid's day at the Al McGuire Center.
