
No. 10 MU Opens BIG EAST Play with 3-0 Sweep Over Butler

The Golden Eagles are on a five-match winning streak
MILWAUKEE—The 10th-ranked Marquette women's volleyball team kicked of the 2019 BIG EAST campaign on a high note with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-15) sweep over Butler in a Wednesday matinee at the Al McGuire Center.
The Al was rocking with over 1,000 school-age children in attendance for Field Trip Day and they enjoyed seeing senior Allie Barber pace the Golden Eagles (11-2, 1-0) with a match-high 13 kills, while freshman Hannah Vanden Berg added seven kills with just one error to hit .400. Senior Gwyn Jones also had a stellar day at the net as she hit a blistering .857 mark with six kills and added two blocks.
Senior setter Lauren Speckman dished out 22 assists, while juniors Hope Werch and Martha Konovodoff collected 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Neither team hit well in the first set as Butler (3-10, 0-1) challenged Marquette, but MU steadily improved its hitting percentage turning in a .235 clip and a .515 mark in the second and third frames, respectively.
The Bulldogs were led by Brooke Gregory and Shanice Horn each with six kills, while Melody Davidson totaled five blocks.
Marquette has a short turnaround and will continue BIG EAST play this weekend hosting Seton Hall on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. CT before facing St. John's at 5 p.m. CT.
