The two freshmen helped key two road wins for MU last week
NEW YORK – Marquette University men's soccer players Christian Marquez and Jackson Weyman earned weekly honors from the BIG EAST Conference after stellar on-field performances, the league office announced on Monday.
Â
Marquez, a true freshman from Berwyn, Illinois, was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after scoring his first two goals of the season this week in key road victories over Wisconsin and Xavier. His 37th minute strike against the Badgers ended up being all that MU needed to win as the Golden Eagles ran out to a 2-0 victory in Madison, Wisconsin.
Â
On Friday night, Marquez struck again, this time with his team tied at one against BIG EAST foe Xavier. He tapped in a beautiful cross from Alex Mirsberger to notch his second game-winning goal of the week in the 77th minute to seal the victory for MU.
Â
Redshirt freshman keeper Jackson Weyman earned his second honor from the conference this season as he was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week after two standout performances in net. Weyman saved two shots on the way to his second clean sheet of the season in a 2-0 victory over Wisconsin Tuesday evening.
Â
The Evanston, Illinois native saved four shots on Friday at Xavier and helped the Golden Eagles hold a talented Musketeers offense to just one goal. The win at Xavier was MU's first win in Cincinnati, Ohio since 2013.
Â
The two freshmen have been critical to the success of MU so far and have an important week ahead. The Golden Eagles play tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. in a non-conference home match against Saint Louis, before completing their week on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against No. 9 St. John's at Valley Fields.
