TAMPA – The Marquette University men's soccer team dropped its first match of the season on Friday evening, falling by the score of 2-1 to the University of South Florida Bulls.
"While we're disappointed in the loss, I was really proud of the way we came back tonight, even though we were down a man for most of the second half," MU head coach Louis Bennett said. "You don't just come in and walk out of South Florida with a win, and we came up just a bit short tonight."
USF kicked off the scoring in the 10th minute with a breakaway goal by Victor Claudel. He slipped behind the defense and put a pass from teammate Henrique Gallina into the back of the net.
MU trailed for the next 69 minutes of action before redshirt freshman Alex Mirsberger netted the equalizer in the 79th minute on an absolute firecracker from just inside the box. The goal was the redshirt freshman from Brookfield, Wisconsin's first-ever collegiate score. Senior defender Patrick Seagrist got credit for the assist, his first of the year.
"We played the ball out from the back and were able to get Patrick [Seagrist] out on the break," Bennett said. "The defense collapsed in the middle and we were able to get Alex [Mirsberger] a shot from the top of the box. I loved the way he was able to compose himself and put the ball into the back of the net."
The tie game was short lived, however, as USF went back up in the 82nd minute on a goal from Trey Jackson, which proved to be the final tally of the match.
MU had a couple chances to tie up the game again in the waning minutes but failed to break through.
Luka Prpa, a three-time all-conference honoree, made his season debut in the 34th minute and made his presence felt immediately. He created space for himself and rifled a shot from at the top of the box, but USF keeper Harrison Devenish-Meares slid over to make a save. Prpa ended up playing 49 minutes on the night as he continues to work his way back into game shape.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jackson Weyman made his third consecutive start, saving a career-high eight shots. He faced a season-high 26 shots (previous high was 17), while the Golden Eagles fired off nine shots on the evening (three on goal).
MU committed 10 fouls on the evening, compared to eight for USF. Sophomore defender Josh Hancock was sent off in the 65th minute after picking up his second yellow card of the night, leaving MU to play the last 25 minutes of the match a man down.
Tonight was MU's first game played in the state of Florida since 2009, which was the last time the Golden Eagles played USF.
With the loss, the Golden Eagles drop to 1-1-1 on the season while the Bulls move to 1-1-0.
MU comes back home to Milwaukee for a week of practice before hosting Northern Illinois on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:05 p.m. at Valley Fields.
