Freshman Hannah Vanden Berg tallied a career-best nine kills
MILWAUKEE—No. 11 Marquette women's volleyball suffered its first loss of the 2019 campaign on Sunday as the Golden Eagles fell to No. 17 Baylor, 3-0 (25-14, 27-25, 25-18).
Marquette's 5-1 record remains the best start for the program since the 1992 season.
Senior Allie Barber connected on 12 kills, while junior Hope Werch tallied 11 kills in the match with a .318 hitting percentage. Freshman Hannah Vanden Berg was efficient tallying a career-best nine kills with just one error to hit at a .400 clip.
Senior Lauren Speckman dished out 18 assists, while junior Sarah Rose delivered 16 assists and junior libero Martha Konovodoff collected 14 digs.
"They executed perfectly from the serve pass, and we did not," head coach Ryan Theis said. "We have to play better at the beginning of matches. If they start off that confident its tough to win. You have to make people uncomfortable and we did not do that."
Baylor (5-0) was led by Yossiana Pressley with a match-high 20 kills and a .444 hitting percentage with four blocks. The Bears combined to hit .385 in the match and totaled 14.5 team blocks, while the Golden Eagles had just four.
Marquette will continue the non-conference slate against a trio of opponents that all reached the 2018 NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles head to Illinois State to face UCF, No. 5 Illinois and the Redbirds in the Redbird Classic presented by The Edge Apartments. The first match will be against UCF on Friday, Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m. CT.
