FS1 features television broadcast
The Marquette University men's basketball team (11-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) wraps up a two-game homestand on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. CT when the squad hosts Providence (9-6, 2-0 BIG EAST) at Fiserv Forum. FS1 will feature the national television broadcast, with Lisa Byington (play-by-play) and Tim Miles (analyst) calling the action. Following Tuesday's matchup, the Golden Eagles will travel to Seton Hall on Saturday, Jan. 11.
Series With Friars Full Of Memories
While the all-time series between Marquette and Providence consists of just 28 games (Marquette leads 19-9), the matchups do include a number of memorable contests for MU fans.
The two programs first met in the 1963 National Invitation Tournament and the result was a 70-64 victory by PC. The teams would cross paths four years later in the same event and a slim 81-80 Marquette overtime win helped the squad to a runner-up finish under head coach Al McGuire.
Guard Markus Howard added to the series' memorable moments on Jan. 3, 2018 when he netted a then school and BIG EAST record 52 points in the 95-90 overtime victory by Marquette at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Marquette swept the home-and-home series in 2018-19 and has claimed three of the last four outings.
McEwen Breaks Through In Latest Win
After reaching double figures in each of the team's first four outings, junior guard Koby McEwen had netted 10-or-more points just twice in eight outings prior to the Villanova game.
The Toronto, Ontario, native broke out of his shooting slump in the win over the Wildcats, finishing with 22 points, his most since netting 23 points in the Nov. 13 victory over Purdue. McEwen finished 10-of-13 from the free throw line and also chipped in four rebounds and two steals.
He knocked down a pair of treys in the win, his first 3-pointer since Dec. 7 at Kansas State and first time with more than one in a game since Nov. 17 at Wisconsin.
John Rebounds With Strong Performance
One game after contributing just one rebound in eight minutes of action in the road loss at Creighton, junior forward Theo John responded with one of his best outings of the season.
The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native chipped in six points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in 33 minutes of action (one short of season-high 34 minutes vs. Purdue). His carom total marked a season best and he hadn't swatted more than three shots in a single game since blocking eight attempts in the season opener vs. Loyola Maryland.
John, who is ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in blocked shots (2.1 bpg.), owns 30 career games with two-or-more blocks.
Elliott Sneaky Efficient 3-Point Shooter
The BIG EAST Conference features some of the top shooters in the country, highlighted by Markus Howard, but a glance at the league statistics features a surprising name at the top of the 3-point field goal percentage category.
Redshirt sophomore Greg Elliott is currently tops in the BIG EAST through games of Jan. 5, knocking down 50.0 percent (14-of-28) of his opportunities from distance. He has attempted more than three treys in a game just once (Grambling State), but 14 of his 26 made baskets this season are from deep.
