MILWAUKEE – Three Marquette University men's soccer players, Josh Coan, Luka Prpa and Patrick Seagrist, are hopeful to be selected in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft, which begins Thursday, Jan. 9 at 11:30 a.m. Central time.
"It's an exciting time for these seniors who have worked their tails off over the course of their collegiate careers to get to this point," MU head coach Louis Bennett said. "Having the opportunity to be drafted and play professional soccer is one that should be cherished and celebrated."
For the first time ever, the 2020 SuperDraft will appear as a jointly produced MLS and ESPN show that will stream live on Twitter, the ESPN App, YouTube and Facebook. The live stream will feature cameras embedded with players and club decision-makers for real-time draftee reactions, live look-ins on club draft rooms, and instant engagement from fans on Twitter.
There are four rounds in the SuperDraft, with each team allowed one pick per round. The first two picks are held by expansion sides Inter Miami and Nashville SC, respectively. The following 10 selections are from teams that did not qualify for the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs, beginning with the team with fewest 2019 regular-season points.
The remaining 14 positions are ranked by fewest regular-season points among the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.
Rounds 1 and 2 will take place on Thursday while the third and fourth rounds will be conducted via conference call on Monday, Jan. 13.
A forward from Indianapolis, Coan led the team in points (16) goals (6), shots (57) and shots on goal (32) in 18 games this season. He also tallied four assists, which tied for second best on the team. He was named Third Team All-BIG EAST in addition to earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for his work in the classroom.
Prpa, a Wind Lake, Wisconsin native, is one of the most decorated players in program history. He's a four-time all-conference selection, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and a three-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. He's tied for No. 8 all-time in program history with 21 career assists.
A two-time All-BIG EAST First Team honoree, defender Patrick Seagrist has been a stalwart on the backline for MU in the past four seasons. He finished first on the team and second in the conference in assists (seven) while also adding two goals this year. He tallied 28 points in his career and started in 63 of the 65 games he's played.
Seagrist and Prpa are projected to be taken in the first two rounds, while Coan is hoping to be picked on the second day of the draft. The Golden Eagles have never had more than two players drafted in the same season.
