Seagrist goes 10th to New York Red Bulls, Prpa drafted 34th by Houston Dynamo
MILWAUKEE – Marquette University men's soccer players Luka Prpa and Patrick Seagrist were drafted in the first two rounds of the 2020 MLS SuperDraft this afternoon.
Â
Seagrist was taken with the 10th pick in the first round by the New York Red Bulls while Prpa went in the second round to the Houston Dynamo with the 34th pick overall. Today's draft results mark the first time in program history that the Golden Eagles had two players drafted in the first two rounds of the SuperDraft in the same season.
Â
"Luka and Patrick have done absolutely everything we've asked from them in the past four years and to see them hear their names called today was tremendous," MU head coach Louis Bennett said. "They were extremely successful both on and off the field and they'll be leaving Marquette with their degrees. I couldn't be prouder of them."
Â
A two-time All-BIG EAST First Team honoree, defender Patrick Seagrist was a staple on the backline for MU in the past four seasons. He finished first on the team and second in the conference in assists (seven) while also adding two goals this year. He tallied 28 points in his career and started in 63 of the 65 games he's played in.
Â
"Today is a dream come true for me," Seagrist said. "I couldn't be happier to be drafted by the [New York] Red Bulls. They're a fantastic organization and their style of play really fits me. I'm ready to get to work."
Â
Prpa, a Wind Lake, Wis., native, is one of the most decorated players in program history. He's a four-time all-conference selection, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and a three-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. He's tied for No. 8 all-time in program history with 21 career assists.
Â
"Being drafted today is an extremely rewarding feeling," Prpa said. "It's a chance to continue my soccer career professionally, which has always been a dream of mine. There's a lot of hard work ahead of me, but I'm ready to put in that work."
Â
Seagrist was the third Golden Eagle in program history to be drafted in the first round and the highest pick in program history at No. 10 overall. Prpa became the second former MU player to go in the second round, joining Calum Mallace, who was a second-round pick in 2012.
Â
Seagrist and Prpa were the sixth and seventh players, respectively, to be drafted in the Louis Bennett era at Marquette.
Â
"These guys completely bought in and put everything they had into the Marquette soccer program," Bennett said. "To see them selflessly give themselves to our program, graduate with great GPA's and earn professional contracts makes me very happy."
Â
The third and fourth rounds of the draft are scheduled to take place on Monday, Jan. 13 via conference call. MU senior forward Josh Coan hopes to have his name called in one of the final two rounds.
