All-state honoree rated as high as 82nd in the country
The Marquette University men's basketball team has signed nationally ranked prep guard Stevie Mitchell (Reading, PA/Wilson HS), head coach Steve Wojciechowski announced Wednesday morning.
Â
Mitchell, a 6-2, 165-pounder, will arrive on campus next summer and have four seasons of eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
Â
"Stevie is the total package," Wojciechowski said. "He is a high character young man who has tremendous basketball talent. Marquette fans will love his personality, what he stands for, and his game. He comes from a tremendous family and I can't wait to coach him."
Â
A consensus nationally ranked recruit, Mitchell is listed 82nd by Rivals.com, 91st by ESPN.com and 114th by 247Sports.com.
Â
A first team all-state honoree as a junior at Wilson High School, Mitchell helped lead the program to the county title and the school's first-ever district championship. He averaged 22.3 points 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game and was tabbed the league's player of the year. The Bulldogs collected a 28-1 overall record and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the state.
Â
In just three years of action, Mitchell is already the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,496 points. He was an all-league and all-county selection as a sophomore after averaging 20.6 points per game and chipped in 10.8 points per contest as a freshman.
Â
Mitchell competed on the AAU circuit for Philly Pride and the program claimed a national championship in the summer of 2019 and he was named most valuable player.
"I chose Marquette because of the great relationship I built with the coaching staff," Mitchell said. "I like that the program has had a lot of good guards that it's been able to help develop and make even better.
Â
"I am excited to be able to get there, work hard and with the help of the coaches become the best version of myself on the court and in life in general," Mitchell added. "To describe my playing style, I would say that I am a winner. I value winning a ton and will do whatever it takes to win. I give my best effort every game on both the offensive and defensive end."
