The Marquette University men's basketball team (4-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) opens BIG EAST Conference play at nationally ranked Creighton (4-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) on Monday Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. CT from the CHI Health Center Omaha. FS1 will feature the national television broadcast, with Brandon Gaudin (play-by-play) and Steve Lavin (analyst) calling the action.
All-Time Series Dates Back To 1922-23
Marquette's all-time series against Creighton spans nearly the entirety of the program's 103-year history.
Prior to 2013-14 when the Bluejays joined the BIG EAST, the most recent meeting between the two programs came in the 1998 National Invitation Tournament. MU posted an 80-68 victory in the opening round at the BMO Harris Bradley Center en route to an appearance in the event's quarterfinals.
Creighton claimed both meetings in the home-and-home series last season and has won three-straight overall after the Golden Eagles had claimed six consecutive matchups from 2016-19.
Defensive Focus Shows Early Dividends
The Marquette coaching staff focused on the defensive end of the court in the shortened preseason and early in 2020-201 those efforts are paying dividends for the Golden Eagles.
Through games of Dec. 12, Marquette ranks among the BIG EAST leaders in several defensive categories including scoring defense (2nd, 63.2 ppg.), field goal percentage defense (1st, .354 -14th in nation), 3-point field goal percentage defense (1st, .265) and defensive rebounds (3rd, 30.0 drpg.).
Marquette is also third in the conference in blocks per game (4.7).
Carton Gaining Comfort In Marquette Offense
Sophomore guard D.J. Carton continues to increase his contribution to the team as he gains comfort in Marquette's system and that process has sped up with his move to the starting lineup.
The Bettendorf, Iowa, native has started each of the last three outings and in those games is contributing 13.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in just over 30 minutes per night. At UCLA, Carton posted a Marquette-best 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor and also chipped in five rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Carton, who spent the 2019-20 campaign at Ohio State, scored a career-high 19 points against Minnesota on Dec. 15, 2019. His last game for the Buckeyes came in late January of 2020.
