Smrek picks up wins in singles and doubles
The Marquette University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the dual campaign with a 6-1 decision over Green Bay Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Marquette opened the match with an efficient performance in doubles, claiming the point in less than 30 minutes. After earning at 6-1 decision at No. 2, senior Luke Smrek and junior Luis Heredia Gomez clinched the point with a 6-1 win of their own.
MU has claimed the doubles point in three of its four dual matchups this year.
Smrek moved Marquette ahead 2-0 with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Green Bay's George Brotha at No. 1 and sophomore Fran San Andres followed suit with a straight-set win at No. 4.
Seniors Brett Meyers and Brandon Shanklin wrapped up their matches at the same time to help Marquette clinch the team victory.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, Feb. 6 when the squad travels to Wisconsin for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.
