Nicholas Quandt's school record in the pole vault highlights the meet
MILWAUKEE āĀ The Marquette University track and field teams finished up their final meet before heading to the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the Panther Tune-Up on Saturday at Milwaukee.
Ā
MU took home 13 event titles, eight top-10 all-time marks and one school record (Nick Quandt) at the Klotsche Center on Saturday. Quandt, who competed for MU in 2017-18, re-joined the team recently and instantly made his mark in the pole vault. His height of 5.01 m/16-5.25 ft set a new school record for the event. The former record was held by Joel Swanberg '18 (5.00 m/16-4.75 ft).
Ā
"This was a really good tune-up meet for the BIG EAST Championship," MU head coach Bert Rogers said. "We wanted to see some kids compete and build confidence for next week and we held some others out to make sure they're at full strength when it matters most."
Ā
In the field events, Daniel Armstrong hit a new PR and facility record on his way to a first-place finish in the high jump (2.22 m/7-3.25 ft). His height puts him at second all-time in program history and No. 13 nationally this season.
Ā
Freshman Imari Hurte's long jump of 7.15 m/23-5.5 ft helped him win the event and take the No. 6 spot all-time in MU history. Jefferson Osunkwo took runner-up honors in the triple jump (13.82 m/45-4.25 ft).
Ā
On the women's side, Lindsey Mirkes and Mila Puseljic had standout performances in the high jump (1.65 m/5-5.00 ft) and triple jump (11.41 m/37-5.25 ft) to take runner-up honors in each event. Allie Flando performed admirably in the shot put (13.79 m/45-3.00 ft), taking second place.
Ā
Julie Clayton won the pole vault (3.83 m/12-6.75 ft) while Brielle Buechler (3.68 m/12-0.75 ft) took second and Kelly Jacoby (3.53 m/11-7.00 ft) took third. The latter two moved into sixth and tenth all-time in program history with their marks today.
Ā
In the track events, MU swept both the men's and women's 400m and 800m races and Madison Marko won the 60-meter hurdles (8.95). She moved up to No. 6 all-time with her PR performance while Juru Okwaramoi (9.00) moved into eighth all-time and set a new freshman record in the event.
Ā
"This is a fun time of year and I'm liking where we're at as a team heading into the conference championships. I think we have a great chance to score a lot of points and make a run at the BIG EAST," Rogers said.
