Brett Meyers clinches team win
The Marquette University men's tennis team (3-3) defeated Valparaiso (2-3) 7-0 Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
For the fifth time in six dual outings, the Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the doubles point. Senior Brett Meyers and sophomore Fran San Andres made quick work of their opponent at No. 2, posting a 6-1 decision. Senior Brandon Shanklin and freshman Stefan Dragovic clinched the point by pulling away for a 6-3 win at No. 3.
"I didn't think we were that sharp in doubles, but I was happy with the way the guys responded in singles," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "Valparaiso is a good program and today was a great challenge for us."
The Golden Eagles uses a trio of straight-set wins to earn the team win, capped by Meyers' 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 4 over Valpo's Gabriel Carvajal.
Marquette returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when the team travels to Purdue. First serve is set for 9 a.m. and the matchup will mark the team's fourth against a Big Ten opponent.
