Keys was seeded 12th entering the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships
NEW ORLEANS – Marquette University multi-event student-athlete Joseph Keys was named an indoor All-American in the men's heptathlon for the 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Tuesday.
Keys set the Marquette record in the heptathlon at the Windy City Rumble at the University of Chicago on Feb. 7-8 with 5,667 points, bettering his previous program best of 5,338. He entered the NCAA Championships seeded 12th and was in New Mexico set to compete at the Albuquerque Convention Center on March 13-14 before the meet was canceled.
It marks the third year in a row that a Marquette athlete has earned indoor All-America recognition, following high jumper Daniel Armstrong in 2018 and 2019. Dan Fax (1997), William Koeck (2014) and Wally Ellenson (2015) have also earned the honor.
Normal policies dictate that All-America honors are awarded based on classifications of performance at the NCAA Championships.
Due to the cancellation of the 2020 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, the NCAA Division I Track & Field Executive Committee adopted the following criteria:
Keys hit then-PR's in all four of the events he competed in on the first day of the Windy City Rumble. He won the 60-meter dash (7.10), long jump (7.32 m/24-0.25 ft), shot put (12.71 m/41-8.50 ft) and took second in the high jump (1.85 m/6-0.75 ft).
On the second day, he won the 60-meter hurdles (8.32), pole vault (4.60 m/15-1 ft) and 1000m (2:45.80) to finish with a total of 5,667 points, which ranks eleventh nationally.
An engineering major, Keys put in extra time last fall to prepare for the heptathlon after working at a co-op during the day.
