He was picked in the first round by the Saskatchewan Rush
MILWAUKEE - Marquette University midfielder Connor McClelland was selected 12th overall by the Saskatchewan Rush in the first round of the 2020 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft on Thursday evening, making him the highest-drafted player in program history.
The redshirt senior has averaged one point per contest over his 44 games with the Golden Eagles and has scored 33 goals. He played just three games as a senior in the spring of 2020 and led the squad with seven goals and nine points at the time of an injury. The two-time BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week began his career at Marquette as a defensive midfielder in 2017, helping the Golden Eagles to a BIG EAST Championship and NCAA tournament appearance.
The Brampton, Ontario native played at St. Michael's College in Toronto before a prep year at Trinity-Pawling School in New York. He has played box lacrosse with his hometown Brampton Exelsiors in the Major Series Lacrosse Senior 'A' League and was drafted as a defensive player.
McClelland's former Marquette teammates Tanner Thomson and John Wagner were each picked in the top-34 picks of last year's draft and Thomson was also a first round selection of the Rush.
McClelland is the seventh player in Marquette history to be selected in the NLL draft, following Thomson, Wagner, Liam Byrnes, Kyle Whitlow, Tyler Melnyk and Andrew Smistad. Melnyk was picked by the Rush in 2014 and was a member of an NLL championship squad.
