Al McGuire Ties Marquette And St. John'sÂ
  Â
The all-time series (Marquette leads 22-15) began in 1959-60 and prior to the clinching of the BIG EAST title on the last day of the regular season in 2012-13, the series' top highlight was a 65-53 Marquette victory in the championship game of the 1970 National Invitation Tournament. Â
  Â
MU claimed the title under the direction of legendary head coach Al McGuire, who played for three seasons at St. John's (1948-51). In his first season with the Redmen, he finished third in scoring with an 8.1 points per game average. Â
  Â
The next season, St. John's finished with a 24-5 record as McGuire averaged 7.7 points a game. He finished his collegiate career in 1951, averaging 8.5 points per game and helping lead his team to third-place finishes in both the NIT and NCAA.Â
  Â
McGuire's coaching career at Marquette included the 1977 national title, nine NCAA tournament appearances and a 295-80 overall record.
Balanced Scoring Leads To Win Over Friars
  Â
Marquette had five players finish with double figures in points in the win over Providence, marking the fourth time this season at least five scored 10-or-more points. Â Through all of 2019-20, no more than four reached that mark in the same outing.
  Â
Marquette's roster currently features four players (Dawson Garcia, Koby McEwen, D.J. Carton and Jamal Cain) averaging 10-or-more points on the season, which hasn't happened for a complete campaign since 2016-17.
  Â
The Golden Eagles had a season-high six players reach double figures in the lidlifter against UAPB.
