MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University men's basketball team fell 75-73 to St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Fiserv Forum.
Theo John tied his career-high with 16 points and all five of MU's starters reached double figures in scoring. Dawson Garcia had a team-high 20 points and nine rebounds while Jamal Cain tallied 14 and seven, but MU's valiant second half comeback fell just short.Â
Marquette (8-9, 4-7 BIG EAST) trailed 46-31 at halftime after St. John's (11-7, 5-6 BIG EAST) shot a scorching 52.9% (18-34) from the field, including 7-of-15 from 3-point range.
The Golden Eagles came out of the locker room aggressively, storming back with a 20-5 run to tie the game at 51 just 5:39 into the second half.
The Red Storm responded with a 12-3 run to re-take the lead, but MU battled back to make it a one-possession game in the closing minutes. The Golden Eagles had a couple chances to tie the game or take the lead in the final 15 seconds, but a missed shot and a turnover eventually spelled their doom.
Julian Champagnie led St. John's with 22 points and seven rebounds while Posh Alexander added 15 and Rasheem Dunn netted 11.
