Men's Soccer Drops Road Contest to UConn

STORRS, Conn. — The Marquette men's soccer team (5-6-1, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) suffered its first road loss of conference play on Wednesday evening, dropping a 2-1 match to the UConn Huskies.
After not recording a shot for the first half hour of play, the Golden Eagles had an opportunity to get on top with a free kick from just outside the box, but freshman Edrey Caceres' shot was denied by the crossbar, ricocheting off the top of the post. Instead, it was the Huskies who struck first with a 36th minute goal by Ben Awashie to break the deadlock.
MU recorded just one shot in the first half, while allowing five to the Huskies.
In the 82nd minute, a foul inside the box against Marquette resulted in a penalty kick, which UConn's Moussa Wade capitalized on to extend the Huskies' lead to two scores. However, just over one minute later, an infraction in the opposite box set up a Marquette penalty kick, which redshirt junior striker Lukas Sunesson sent past the keeper for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Additionally, this was his fifth goal in the past five matches.
"We're disappointed that we didn't come away with anything," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "It was a good game. We were well capable of coming back into it and they really didn't bother us much until the penalty, and then we could have folded but it's a credit to our players that we didn't. We need to have a short memory now because it's just three more days then we're back at it again."
Despite recording six second-half shots, MU's late comeback push came up short as the Golden Eagles lost, 2-1.
NEXT UP: Marquette returns home this weekend to face the DePaul Blue Demons (6-5-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7:05 p.m. (CT) at Valley Fields.
