MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University men's soccer team (5-6-1, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) is set for a home-road split against a pair of BIG EAST opponents. The Golden Eagles will first host DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7:05 p.m. (CST) at Valley Fields, before heading to Indianapolis to face the Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m.
DePaul enters Saturday's contest in search of its first road win in conference play. The Blue Demons (6-5-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) currently sit in seventh place in the BIG EAST standings, one spot ahead of Marquette. The DePaul defense has allowed one or fewer goals to its opponent in nine of 12 matches this year. The Blue Demons are led by sophomore forward Marek Gonda, who has recorded four goals and a team-high 20 shots.
After a 4-6-1 start to the season and a 2-2-0 start to conference play, Butler sits one spot behind Marquette in the conference standings entering the week. Home field has been friendly to the Bulldogs, who are undefeated (3-0-1) at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl. Junior forward Wilmer Cabrera leads the way with three of the squad's eight goals this season.
Honors Keep Coming for Sunesson
For the second consecutive week, redshirt junior striker Lukas Sunesson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The Swede posted one of the top offensive outings of his career in MU's 3-1 win at Creighton, scoring two goals and recording a career-high six shots, four of which were on goal. The previous week, Sunesson scored a goal and assisted on another in Marquette's draw against No. 22/23 Providence. The All-American has now found the back of the net five times in the previous five matches.
Andrade Emerges as Team's Top Facilitator
Redshirt junior midfielder Zyan Andrade has established himself as one of Marquette's top playmakers this season, currently tied as the BIG EAST leader in assists with five. The Brazil native has recorded four assists in the past five games for the Golden Eagles, including two in the team's 3-1 win at Seton Hall. In conference play alone, Andrade's four assists place him atop the BIG EAST leaderboard.
Series History
All-time against DePaul, Marquette has dominated the series history with a 29-6-1 overall record. The Blue Demons are 1-16 in Milwaukee, with their lone win coming in 2006. Last season, MU posted a pair of wins over DePaul, winning 2-1 in Milwaukee and 3-1 in Chicago.
Marquette leads the series with the bulldogs, 7-5-1, and has not lost to Butler since 2017. In Indianapolis, MU is 1-3-1 with its lone win coming in 2018.
