
Vanden Berg posts 16 kills as MU tops Seton Hall, 3-1

MILWAUKEE -Â Hannah Vanden Berg posted a career-high 16 kills as the Marquette University women's volleyball team held off Seton Hall for a 3-1 win on Saturday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
The Golden Eagles (16-3, 7-1 BIG EAST) hit .370 (64-10-146) in the victory and were led by Vanden Berg's mark of .552. She led four players with double digit kills, as Hope Werch and Savannah Rennie each had 13 and Taylor Wolf posted 12. All four hit above .330 and Rennie posted a .550 mark with three blocks.
Marquette reeled off an 8-0 run after trailing 18-16 in the opening set before closing out the frame, 25-21. Werch made her presence felt early in the match with seven kills and three aces in the first stanza as the Golden Eagles hit .371 (17-4-35).
The Pirates claimed the second set, 25-22, by hitting. 368 (15-1-38). Marquette led 19-18 before Seton Hall pulled away for the win to knot the match at the break.
The Golden Eagles rolled to a 25-12 win in the third set by hitting .421 (17-1-38). Vanden Berg had six kills on nine swings in the frame and MU forced the Pirates to use both their timeouts by the time Marquette had taken a 15-5 lead.Â
Marquette went up 15-10 in the fourth frame and pulled out the four-set win by holding SHU to a hitting mark of .057 with eight hitting errors.
Seton Hall (10-12, 2-6 BIG EAST), which hit a combined .236, was led by nine kills from Tsvetelina Ileva.
MU has won 10 consecutive meetings against the Pirates since a five-set loss in the 2014 BIG EAST semifinals at the Al McGuire Center.
