Golden Eagles can earn postseason bid with win
The Marquette University women's soccer team (8-8-0) will close out its regular season against DePaul (7-10-0) on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.
SENIOR NIGHT
Thursday's match is Senior Night, where Alyssa Bombacino, Sammi Bugay, Madison Burrier, Elaina Eckert, Rachel Johnson, Bonnie Lacey, Meredith McGuire, Maddie Monticello, Kylie Sprecher and Katrina Wetherell will be recognized during a pre-match ceremony.
The group totaled 39 goals as a unit throughout their Marquette careers and have combined to play in over 490 matches, notching 365 starts.
POSTSEASON PICTURE
The Golden Eagles and DePaul are currently tied with 12 points and sit at seventh in the BIG EAST standings. With a win and a UConn loss or draw or a Providence loss, Marquette would finish as a top-six team in the conference to earn a postseason bid.
MU also has a chance to finish as the fifth seed with a win over the Blue Demons, a UConn loss or draw and a Providence loss. If MU and the Friars happen to end up tied at 15 points, Providence holds the tiebreaker after edging the Golden Eagles 3-1 on Oct. 10.
SERIES VS. DEPAUL
Marquette is 17-6-2 in 25 all-time matches against DePaul. MU has taken the last two meetings between both teams, and its most recent win came in the form of a 1-0 decision on March 25.
SENIOR SALUTE
Alyssa Bombacino was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2018 and tabbed All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2019. She has appeared in 60 career matches and owns 12 goals. A member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, Alyssa will graduate this May with a degree in psychology.
Sammi Bugay has appeared in five matches for the Golden Eagles during her career, including one starting assignment last season against Illinois State. A member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, Sammi will graduate in fall of 2022 with a degree in finance and plans to pursue her masters in the same field.
Madison Burrier scored her first career goal earlier this season in the win over St. John's and has appeared in 57 career matches for MU, including 48 starting assignments. A two-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, she will earn her degree in journalism with a minor digital media in May of 2022.
Elaina Eckert has appeared in 48 career matches for Marquette dating back to 2017, including 24 starting assignments. She owns one goal and a pair of assists and is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection. She graduated with a degree in speech pathology and audiology in spring of 2021 and next fall will conclude her masters in speech-language pathology.
Rachel Johnson has started 34 of the 57 career matches in which she has played, including each of the 16 outings in 2021. She owns five goals and five assists in her career, including a pair of game-winning scores this season. A three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree, Rachel graduated in May of 2021 with a degree in exercise physiology and is currently in her first year of physical therapy school.
Bonnie Lacey has started each of the team's 16 matches in 2021 and owns 35 career appearances dating back to 2019. She has been in the starting eleven on 31 occasions and is a two-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. She will conclude her course work in biomedical sciences next year and is currently in her first year of physical therapy school.
Meredith McGuire concluded her playing career in the Spring after appearing in 10 matches for the Golden Eagles. She started three of those outings, netting a goal in the season opener last year against Chicago State. Meredith earned her bachelor's in corporate communication in 2020 and will complete her work toward a MBA from Marquette in December.
Maddie Monticello has appeared in 76 career matches dating back to the 2017 campaign, including 58 starting assignments. She has played over 5,000 minutes for the Blue and Gold and is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection. She graduated in May of 2021 with a double major in marketing and data analytics and is currently working on her MBA.
A BIG EAST All-Freshman Team honoree in 2017, Kylie Sprecher owns nine goals, including four game winners, and 14 assists in 81 career appearances. She has started in 67 matches and is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree. Kylie earned her bachelor's in marketing and finance in May of 2021 and is currently working on her MBA.
Katrina Wetherell is a two-time All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree and owns nine goals and nine assists in her 62-game career at Marquette. She has scored a personal-best four goals in 2021, including a pair of game winners. She was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2018. Katrina is majoring in corporate communications and will graduate in the spring of 2022.
