Golden Eagles honor 10-member senior class
MILWAUKEE, WI -- The Marquette University women's soccer team (9-8-0, 5-5-0 BIG EAST) concluded their 2021 season with a 2-1 win over the visiting DePaul University Blue Demons (7-11-0, 4-5-0 BIG EAST) at Valley Fields.
Despite the victory, Marquette was eliminated from the BIG EAST Tournament following wins by UConn and Providence earlier in the day.
The Golden Eagles matched up against the Blue Demons in a rainy Thursday affair at Valley Fields. The final game for both Marquette and DePaul was highlighted by Senior Night, where Marquette honored Alyssa Bombacino, Sammi Bugay, Madison Burrier, Elaina Eckert, Rachel Johnson, Bonnie Lacey, Meredith McGuire, Maddie Monticello, Kylie Sprecher and Katrina Wetherell during a pre-match ceremony.
The scoring was opened by the visitors, as first-year forward Katie Godden scored on a cross from Grace Phillpotts. The goal was scored in 11th minute.
Marquette was quick to respond, however, as forward Elsi Twombly netted her second goal of the season. The counterattack goal was assisted by two of Marquette's graduating players; Eckert and Monticello.
The Golden Eagles took the lead off a corner kick that snuck its way through the DePaul defense. Wetherell was credited with the goal in the 40th minute as she took the corner.
The second half of play was a much more defensive half as neither team was able to find the back of the net. Mikki Easter finished the game for Marquette with three saves.
Marquette finished with six shots, three of them on goal while DePaul had six shots, with four on goal.
