Balanced Scoring Leads To Opening Win
Marquette featured four players in double figures and seven total with seven-or-more points in Tuesday night's 88-77 season-opening win over SIUE.
Senior guard Darryl Morsell led the way with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor in 28 minutes of action. He also found time to chip in four rebounds, two assists and a block. Morsell's point total marked a collegiate high for the Maryland transfer, who hadn't scored more than 19 points (1/10/21 at Illinois) in 126 appearances with the Terrapins.
Freshman Stevie Mitchell added 14 points off the bench and George Mason transfer Tyler Kolek added 10 points and nine assists. Kolek has led the team in assists in all three outings (scrimmage at Boston College, exhibition vs. Bowie State and opener vs. SIUE) so far in 2021-22.
Lewis Collects First Double-Double
Forward Justin Lewis was the program's most experienced player (Oso Ighodaro played in five games at MU in 2020-21), in terms of outings in a Marquette uniform, to see action on Tuesday night in the opener.
He appeared in 22 games as a true freshman in 2020-21, earning one starting assignment, and began this season with his first career double-double. The Baltimore, Maryland, native finished with 17 points and 11 boards in 30 minutes of action. He made his second career start in the season lidlifter and also chipped in a pair of assists and a steal.
Lewis narrowly missed his personal-best point total of 18 points, recorded against Wisconsin last season. His rebound total marked his second effort of 10-or-more in a game, surpassed by only a 13-carom effort against Oklahoma State (12/1/20).
