
Volleyball sweeps Georgetown

The Golden Eagles will honor seven seniors on Saturday prior to the Villanova match

MILWAUKEE -Â The Marquette University women's volleyball team defeated Georgetown in straight sets, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19, on Friday night to capture its 14th sweep of the season.

Marquette (24-4, 15-2 BIG EAST) is now 20-4 all-time against the Hoyas. The Golden Eagles are 11-0 at the Al McGuire Center against GU, with a current 17-match win streak.

Savannah Rennie and Jenna Reitsma each posted 11 kills to pace MU, and Taylor Wolf and Ellie Koontz each added five. Wolf also had a team-high 16 digs and three blocks.

Marquette hit .248 (43-16-109) on the evening to Georgetown's .152 (34-17-112).

After trailing 21-18 toward the end of the first set, Marquette rattled off an impressive 7-2 run to close the set and take the early advantage. Rennie, Wolf and Reitsma each recorded a kill during the rally.

Following a second-set victory, the Golden Eagles took the third with ease and never surrendered the lead after taking a 4-3 edge at the front end of the set.

Mary Grace Goyena led the Hoyas (7-21, 3-14 BIG EAST) with 11 kills and hit .274 on the night. Elissa Barbosa notched seven kills, and Makana Meyer tallied six.

Marquette can secure at least a share of the league title with a win tomorrow against Villanova and can claim it outright if Creighton were to drop its finale against St. John's. MU's only BIG EAST regular season and tournament crowns came in 2013, when MU won the regular season by three matches and topped Creighton in the conference tournament in Omaha.
