The Golden Eagles look to earn at-large bid to the NCAA tournament
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's volleyball fell to the No. 22 Creighton Bluejays (25-20, 25-22, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center in the title bout of the 2021 BIG EAST Conference Women's Volleyball Championship, presented by JEEP.Â
Savannah Rennie led Marquette (26-5) with 12 kills, while Jenna Reitsma totaled seven kills and five blocks. Graduate student Taylor Wolf added a double-double with 18 assists and 14 digs while contributing seven kills.
Wolf and libero Carly Skrabak were both named to the All-BIG EAST Championship Team following the two-day event.
Marquette hit just .083 in the game (34-24-121), with the Bluejays hitting .147 (36-20-109).
Freshman Norah Sis paced Creighton (30-3) with 13Â kills, and Jaela Zimmerman added a double-double (11 kills, 12 digs)Â to deliver the Bluejays their seventh BIG EAST postseason title.
The Golden Eagles are now 12-13Â all-time in the BIG EAST Championship and have advanced to the title match seven times, including five-straight years since 2017.
Marquette now sits at 5-24 all-time against the Bluejays, with the most recent MU win coming in Feb. 2021. The Jays captured both regular season matches this year against MU, 3-1, and are 8-2 all-time against Marquette at the Al McGuire Center. The Golden Eagles' last home win in the series came in Oct. 2017.
It was a tightly contested first set, but 10 attack errors for the Golden Eagles allowed CU to pick up a 25-20 win. MU led by as many as six in the second frame, but the Jays rallied back and captured a 25-22 victory. The final stanza went back-and-forth with each team holding multiple leads, but the Jays took the title with a 25-20 win.
