Golden Eagles fall short in final game of Daytona Beach Invitational
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Marquette women's basketball (4-2, 0-0) team lost to Georgia, 70-45, in its second and final game of the Daytona Beach Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Remaining unbeaten with the win, Georgia (6-0, 0-0 SEC) led the contest from start to finish. Relentless defense from the Lady Bulldogs held MU to a season-low 32.2 percent (19-of-59) shooting from the field while forcing 19 turnovers.
Graduate forward Lauren Van Kleunen led all Golden Eagles in the scoring column with 13 points, her third straight game scoring in double figures. Junior guard Jordan King chipped in 12 points, along with five assists and five boards.Â
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Mikayla Coombs and Jenna Staiti, who each finished with 13 points.Â

Marquette trailed 31-17 at half after shooting just 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from the field and being held scoreless (0-of-8) from 3-point range.

The Golden Eagles were able to cut the Georgia lead back down to single-digits shortly after halftime (35-26, 6:32-3rd).

MU won the rebounding battle, 43-37 and held Georgia to 10 offensive boards. The Lady Bulldogs entered the contest leading the nation in offensive rebounds per game (19.2) and fourth in total rebounds per game (50.0).

Marquette has outrebounded opponents in all six of its games this season.

Lauren Van Kleunen scored a team-best 13 points, her third consecutive game reaching double figures.Â

Jordan King reached double figures for the fourth time this season, finishing with 12 points. She also had a team-best five assists.

Kennedi Myles and Liza Karlen split time in the post, each recording seven boards.
UP NEXT: Marquette will return home to begin BIG EAST play with a pair of conference matchups next weekend. It will face Xavier (2-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) on Friday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Al McGuire Center.
