MU adds two-time JUCO national player of the year and 2019 Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's volleyball team has announced the addition of highly-touted transfers Yadhira Anchante and Aubrey Hamilton.
Both will arrive at Marquette for the spring semester, and each have three years of NCAA eligibility remaining.
"We are very excited about these two additions," said Marquette head coach Ryan Theis. "Our roster is really young right now so adding two players with some collegiate experience will make us stronger."
Hamilton, a native of Hartland, Wisconsin, arrives after two standout campaigns at the University of Notre Dame where she earned ACC All-Freshman Team honors last spring and was the squad's kill and point leader this fall.
"As a local product, we've been familiar with Aubrey for a long time," Theis said. "She has a terrific arm and can score a lot of points from the front and back row. We expect her to be a big contributor for us and are happy she chose to continue her collegiate career back home."
The 6-foot-2 outside hitter paced the Fighting Irish this fall with 316 kills (3.07 per set), along with 12 service aces, 85 digs and 48 blocks. She had a career-high 20 kills on .375 hitting at Georgia Tech on Oct. 1 and has accumulated 511 kills (2.94/set) in 47 career matches.
During a standout prep career at Arrowhead High School, Hamilton led their Warhawks to their first state championship as a senior in 2019 on her way to Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year honors. During her senior season she also garnered Under Armour Third Team All-America recognition and was the No. 34 recruit in the country according to PrepVolleyball.com. Hamilton joins three Under Armour All-Americans on the MU roster in Jenna Reitsma (2020, third team), Ella Foti (2020, honorable mention) and Hannah Vanden Berg (2018, honorable mention).
She was a three-time first team all-state selection at Arrowhead and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Player of the Year as a senior.
Anchante is a two-time NJCAA Division I National Player of the Year and led Iowa Western Community College to consecutive NJCAA Division I national titles. She also earned NJCAA Division I tournament most valuable player and first team all-America honors for the second time in as many seasons this fall while leading the Reivers to a 33-4 record.
"This fall we started looked into some junior college players and Yadira popped out at us," Theis said. "She's a great teammate and locates hitters very well. We are excited to get her into the gym this spring and look forward to seeing what made her such a winner the past two seasons."Â Â
The 6-foot setter led the nation with 11.34 assists per set and was second in the country with 1,554 in total. She recorded over 50 assists in both the national semifinal and final this fall, while posting season-long totals of 94 blocks, 477 digs and a .261 hitting percentage.
The native of Lima, Peru attended Maria Reina Del Cielo High School prior to her time at Iowa Western.
The Golden Eagles went 26-6 and are coming off a BIG EAST Conference regular season championship and 10th NCAA tournament appearance this fall. They are set to lose seven players from this year's roster, including all-conference performers at setter, outside hitter and middle blocker.
