The Golden Eagles shot a 2-over 286 and sit five strokes back from second-place Pepperdine
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf team sits sixth with a 2-over-par 286 after the first day in a loaded 24-team field at The Prestige in La Quinta, California.
The Golden Eagles are one stroke behind No. 17 SMU and three behind No. 11 Arizona through 18 holes at the PGA West – Greg Norman Course and were led by All-American Hunter Eichhorn's 2-under 69. Tyler Leach and Aidan Lafferty each recorded 1-under 70s to buoy Marquette's team score on the day. Eichhorn is tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard, while Leach and Lafferty are tied for 16th.
The Prestige field includes a total of six ranked teams, including No. 3 Arizona State, No. 5 Pepperdine and No. 9 San Diego State. ASU and Pepperdine lead the field after day one at 8-under (276) and 3-under (281), respectively.
Heading off the back nine, Eichhorn recorded bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 before back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16. After making the turn at even par, he offset one bogey on the front nine with three birdies.
Lafferty led the Golden Eagles with six birdies on Monday.
The team's individual competitors, Scott Schlader and Connor Brown, also competed on Monday at Coral Mountain Golf Club in a separate individual event in La Quinta.
