The Golden Eagles return to action next Saturday against Western Illinois
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Creighton in the second overtime period on Saturday night at Valley Fields.
CU's Jake Ronneberg scored the golden goal for the Bluejays (1-0-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) in the 105th minute to break a 1-1 tie.
Â
It was a back and forth first half with neither team able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of action. One of MU's top chances came when redshirt sophomore A.J. Franklin had a header float just wide of the net. Redshirt junior Zak Wegner also had a blast from the top of the box get knocked away in the 30th minute.
Â
In the second half, CU's Charles Auguste slotted the ball into the back of the net after a centering pass from Owen O'Malley following a couple of short passes off a corner kick.Â
MU answered right back 15 minutes later on a goal from Lukas Sunesson, who netted his second of the season on a header off a cross from Christian Marquez.
Redshirt sophomore keeper Chandler Hallwood kept the Golden Eagles alive in the second half, coming up with several big saves to keep the Bluejays at bay. One of his biggest came in the 57th minute when he came off his position to make a sliding save. He saved a career-high seven shots on the night.
For the fourth consecutive game, MU found itself in an overtime battle. Unlike its first three games, this overtime thriller didn't go the Golden Eagles way. With the loss, MU drops to 3-1 on the season and 0-1 in BIG EAST play.
