Jordan King led the way with 17 points
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marquette women's basketball team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas, 55-48, at McDonough Arena on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, MU (12-2, 9-1 BIG EAST) earns its sixth straight conference victory and improves to 9-1 on the road this season.
Sophomore guard Jordan King scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the first half to aid a slow start offensively for the Golden Eagles in a first 20 minutes that saw them shoot just 29 percent (9/31) from the field. She was the only MU player to reach double figures in what ended up being a balanced scoring effort with nine different players scoring at least one basket. Lauren Van Kleunen netted eight points and had six boards while Camryn Taylor went for seven points and eight rebounds.
Georgetown (1-8, 1-8 BIG EAST)Â led for most of the first half until MU went on a 6-0 run in the final 2:31 of the second quarter to head into halftime with a 24-20 lead. The Hoyas shot 42.9 percent in the first half, but were hampered by 11 turnovers.
MU clamped down on defense towards the end of the first half and into the opening minutes of the second half, holding the Hoyas scoreless for over seven minutes of game time as it went on a 13-0 run to take an 11-point lead. MU led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter as Jordan King and Taylor Valladay combined to score 11 of the Golden Eagles 18 points in the frame.
GT cut MU's lead to 53-48 with 1:33 remaining and had multiple chances to make it a one score game, but a turnover and a missed shot resulted and the Hoyas would get no closer. Chloe Marotta hit two free throws in the final 15 seconds to secure a seven point win for the Golden Eagles.
Graceann Bennett led Georgetown with 12 points and six rebounds while Kelsey Ransom, Jillian Archer and Milan Bolden-Morris scored nine points each.
