Caroline Steller tied a career-high with five goals
MILWAUKEE -Â The Marquette women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-13Â battle against UConn on Friday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Senior attacker Caroline Steller led the way offensively once again for the Golden Eagles (3-4, 0-1 BIG EAST), tying her career-high with five goals. Sophomore Hannah Greving tallied her second hat trick of the season while five other MU players had one goal apiece.
MU started slow on the offensive end while the Huskies (5-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) scored four of the games first five goals to go up 4-1. Steller scored three straight goals and Mary Schumar added one to give MU its first lead of the game at 5-4 with 10 minutes left in the first half. Steller added her fourth goal of the game a couple minutes later after UConn tied the game at five. The Huskies went on a 3-0 run to end the half, however, and took an 8-6 lead into the break.
The Golden Eagles came out firing in the second half, tallying two goals almost immediately to tie the game at eight. Leigh Steiner and Emma Soccodato scored the two unassisted goals. A UConn goal put the Huskies back up by one but Steller's fifth goal of the game and a tally from Lindsey Hill put MU back up, 10-9.
MU and UConn continued to go back-and-forth until the game was tied at 13-13 with 3:12 left in the game after Greving's third goal. Sydney Watson, the BIG EAST's leading scorer, netted her 25th goal of the season for the Huskies with 2:42 to play, a marker that would prove to be the game-winner. The Golden Eagles had a chance to tie late in the game, but a shot from Megan Menzuber was saved by UConn's Landyn White.
Â
Marquette was outshot 32-27 and lost the draw control battle by a narrow margin at 15-14. Senior goalie Sophia Leva saved 10 shots, her second game in a row with double-digit saves.
