MILWAUKEE - Marquette University men's lacrosse fell to the No. 10 Georgetown Hoyas, 10-8, at Valley Fields on Saturday afternoon.
It was Senior Day for the Golden Eagles, with MU honoring 17 team members, including 15 student-athletes and multiple members of the support staff.
Redshirt freshman Devon Cowan led MU (1-7, 0-6 BIG EAST) with a career-high six goals, while Jake Stegman and Griffin Fleming each added one.
Georgetown jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but two goals from Cowan lessened the deficit to 4-2 after the first frame.
Stegman opened the scoring in the second quarter with a highlight-reel goal, and Cowan reached a hat trick with seconds to play in the half. The Golden Eagle defense clamped down in the quarter and MU trailed just 5-4 at the halftime break.
Cowan scored three goals in the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7, and Fleming gave Marquette the 8-7 advantage heading into the final frame.
But Georgetown's defense proved too strong as the Hoyas outscored MU 3-0 in the closing minutes and handed the Golden Eagles their sixth BIG EAST loss.
Sean Richard made 10 saves between the pipes, Thomas Washington won seven face-offs and defenseman Mason Woodward had four ground balls and three caused turnovers on the day.
For Georgetown (8-1, 7-1 BIG EAST), Jake Carraway and Dylan Watson each totaled four goals, while TJ Haley had four assists and Nicky Petkevich added three helpers. Netminder Owen McElroy made nine saves in the game, and James Reilly won 14-of-22 face-offs.
